What’s Happening at the Milwaukee Art Museum: May 23-May 29

On Thursday, May 26, the Museum will host a discussion about the controversy surrounding the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture at 7:30 p.m. in Lubar Auditorium. The discussion will focus on the removal of “A Fire in My Belly,” a video by artist David Wojnarowicz and will feature Jonathan D. Katz, the co-curator of the exhibition and Chair of the Visual Studies Doctoral Program at SUNY Buffalo. The event is free with Museum admission and open to the public.

In other news, the Museum announced that it is once again participating in the Blue Star Museums program for the summer, and will offer free admission to active duty military and their families from Monday, May 30 through Monday, September 5. Servicemen and women, as well as their spouses and children, receive free admission with a valid military ID.

As an added incentive to visit, the Museum will be open on Mondays starting May 3o through September 5, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. That means the entire Museum collection, as well as Cafe Calatrava, the Museum Store, and the upcoming Summer of CHINA exhibitions, will be open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (until 8 p.m. on Thursdays).
